We recently had the chance to visit our collaboration partner, Abel Reels at their Camarillo, CA headquarters. During our day with Jeff Patterson, Abel's VP, he gave us the full tour of their facility and operations. Known around the USA and the world as one of the foremost fly fishing reel manufacturers, Abel Reels holds more world records in biggest catches than all the other fly reel companies combined.
Along with their many accolades, Abel is known as the pioneer of blue water fly fishing (referring to deep sea fly fishing off shore). Before Abel designed their proprietary drag systems, no other manufacturer had been successful in creating a reel that had a drag system capable of handling the intense energy from a large fish like a marlin or shark.
Abel Reels, founded in 1980, started as an aerospace machine shop making parts for the military and commercial aerospace industries. Shortly after, they switched their skills and capabilities into full-time crafting of fly fishing products. Using only the highest quality materials on the planet such as cold finished aerospace grade aluminum blocks, Abel machines their reels using ultra high-precision CNC machines and maintains machining tolerances so tight, they typically only seen in the aerospace industry.
Once machined, the reels are then hand polished, hand anodized and hand painted all under one roof at their California factory. Unlike many fly fishing companies who outsource either the component production or various processes in the production cycle, Abel keeps all of the steps under their full control to ensure the most consistent and highest quality results. Their focus on quality, like with Ball and Buck, ensures absolutely no corners are cut.
Abel Reels employs an entire team of highly skilled artists who are responsible for hand painting the graphics and designs on their products. With their artists being a part of the company, Abel can create the highest quality art and designs. The Abel Reels x Ball and Buck collaboration reel is built atop of a bead-blasted satin matte finish. Our proprietary design and Roger logo is engraved on the reel and all of the fishing tools. The handle is sourced from high end "fine gun grade" walnut and the internals of the reel are entirely stainless steel for use in salt or freshwater. We are thrilled to bring you more details on the collaboration and our partnership shortly.
